Clothing Subscription Boxes | $29-$299 Which One is Best For You?
Hey gents, I did my first clothing subscription video in February 2017. And since then, a lot has changed but at the same time, a lot hasn’t. A lot of my recommendations still remain true because I like to tell you things that benefit you for a long time.
So today, I’m going to cover all the clothing subscriptions that are out there. I haven’t tried every single brand, but I’ve tried every type of subscription service for men so I can give you the best recommendation.
Who are clothing subscriptions for? They’re for guys that don’t like going out, shopping, and looking for things. It’s the reason that I’ve stayed with Trunk Club and Stitch Fix all these years. Today, we’ll be taking a look at 11 different subscription services that I’ve found will benefit you guys. Let’s start by taking a look at the boxes for accessories and lifestyle.
Accessories and Lifestyle:
Accessories and Lifestyle boxes are for people looking to get a few EDC items and personal pieces that they can take with them. I personally recommend Bespoke Post and GQ’s Best Stuff Box because they offer a wide variety of items. Bespoke Post offers monthly boxes containing everything from axes to pocket squares and the GQ Editors come together to create the Best Stuff Box by combining all their favorites over the past quarter.
Bespoke Post
Bespoke Post is the one I highly recommend for accessories and lifestyle due to the fact that you can customize and personalize each box you receive. They’re $45 per box and you only pay when the box ships. Each box can contain apparel, EDC, home utilities, and even cigars. You can also skip a month if you don’t like any of their boxes.
GQ Best Stuff Box
The GQ Best Stuff box is not customizable. Rather, it’s a culmination of the GQ Editors’ favorite products for that quarter. These boxes can include electronics, grooming products, apparel, and other interesting accessories.
You can pay $49.99 per quarter or $189.99 per year. You can check the contents of each box by looking through their social media channels or their website. Some notable pieces that have been through their GQ Best Stuff box are New Republic White Sneakers and Rhone workout shorts.
Gentleman’s Box
The Gentleman’s Box holds 4-6 accessories for $29/month. However, you can get some really nice luxury items for $100/quarter. At $100/quarter, you’re getting 4-5 luxury pieces. Gentleman’s Box only focuses on accessories so this is really good for EDC.
This box was great for me because I was able to check out a ton of pocket squares, watches, socks, ties, and many other things for a really affordable price.
Personal Styling Services
The way I define clothing subscription services are boxes that send you actual clothing. That’s where the real ones come in. The three I recommend are Trunk Club, Stitch Fix, and Bombfell. Those three services offer the key things that I think make up a subscription box.
Firstly, they’re flexible in how often you can get them delivered and secondly, they allow you to send back the pieces you don’t like. The thing that separates these three subscription services are the types of clothing in there. I’ve found that Stitch Fix varies the most when it comes to pricing while Trunk Club and Bombfell tend to have higher prices.
Trunk Club
For Trunk Club, there’s a $25 styling fee which goes towards credit for clothing. The thing that makes Trunk Club unique is you only pay for clothing that you keep. Every month, 6-10 pieces are shipped out to your home and you keep what you like.
Stitch Fix
Like Trunk Club, Stitch Fix has a $25 styling fee credited to clothing which you keep. From there, they’ll send you 5+ items based on your preferences and you can choose what you want. The great thing about Stitch Fix is that they give you options ranging from super affordable to pretty expensive
Bombfell
Bombfell is a more high-quality subscription box. They only charge a $20 styling fee, but their clothes average around $79 per piece. The great thing about Bombfell is that you get your own personal stylist for each box and you’re the one who approves each order before it’s shipped out. That way, everything you like is in each box that comes to your front door.
Tip: With all these services, don’t expect them to get it right the first time. The first time will be good, the second time will be better, and in my experience, the third time will be when they nail it. So you’re going to need to put a little time and effort into this
Clothing Subscriptions
These are companies where you pay a fixed monthly price and then they ship you clothing that is “worth” more than what you paid for. You’re getting the same number of pieces every month and usually, no returns are available.
I’d personally go with a more bespoke approach like Stitch Fix or Bombfell because the quality of the clothes are much better. But if you’re just getting started and just building that wardrobe, then this might be the way for your to go.
Trendy Butler
What I like about Trendy Butler is that they give you a comprehensive quiz on your preferences and styles. Then, from there, an AI stylist will pick your clothes and ship out pieces to you. For $65 a month, you’re getting a shirt, a trouser, and any other pieces that the stylist chooses for you.
Menlo House
At a minimum $60 per month, Menlo House is sending you 2 pairs of New Republic footwear, 2 pieces of Grand AC athletic leisure wear, and 8 pieces of Five Four Contemporary wear over the course of one year.
With each monthly box, you’re also getting 2-3 pieces. An extra incentive they add is a 25% off discount from additional items bought on their website. They have no minimum commitment but you have to cancel each box before the 14th of each month.
Stately
Stately uses pretty fixed prices. At $99, you’re getting 3 items. At $149, you’re getting a minimum of 5 items. However, with Stately, you’re not paying this price per month. You’re paying this price with each package you buy so it’s nice that they also have minimal commitment.
Threadlab
Threadlab has been rather shaky for me these past few months. When I go onto their website, I’ve noticed that their website’s security isn’t verified. Even with a VPN, their FAQ and subscription pages weren’t loading and it still seems like most of their pages aren’t working properly. Therefore, it’s hard to give a comprehensive review when I can’t access their boxes.
StyleGirlfriend
This is more of an honorable mention since it doesn’t really fit in with the other categories. StyleGirlfriend lets you work 1-on-1 with a personal stylist to either build or refresh your wardrobe.
At $159, StyleGirlfriend will help you redesign 4-6 of your pieces and at $299, their stylist will help you pick out 12-15 items from their offerings. So, it’s a little like Stitch Fix but your stylist will be doing some shopping at higher end places like Brooks Brothers.
