Long Ties | Ties for Tall Men (6'3+)

Hey gents, today we’re going to be talking about extra long ties. This post, by the way, is inspired by a conversation with my friend Chris over at Ordinarily Dapper. He was kind enough to hook me up with an extra long Rampley & Co. tie when we met at the most recent Menfluential conference and it sent me down the long but stylish rabbit hole of extra long ties because I, as a tall guy, need them.

I’m going to talk about tie length in general and then talk about how it applies to tall men like me, which I consider 6’1” and above (well above the current average U.S. adult male height).

I’m also going highlight some of my favorite brands, and I have a lot! I’m sure you’ll find something to suit you whether you’re rich as Croesus or Walmart stretches your budget. For quick reference, I’ve got a list of all these brands in the description of the related youtube video.

How Long Should an Extra Long Tie Be?

In general, extra long ties really only give you a few more inches more than standard ties, but if you’re extremely tall, this will to make or break the way your tie looks on you. I find myself in an interesting spot because even though I am 6’4, most of my height comes from my legs. As a result, my torso really isn’t that much longer than most guys who are average height. One could say that this puts me at a bit of an advantage in terms of which ties I can and can’t wear. It certainly allows me a larger selection than guys with longer torsos.

Tie length 101

Regardless of your height, you want to make sure that your tie goes all the way to the waistband of your trusers, the tip landing either mid-belt or slightly below. You don’t want to go too far down the fly and you definitely don’t want it hanging above your waistline: no matter what your height, that always looks ridiculous.

If you don’t LIke Rules…

You can bend them a bit and still be stylish. For tall guys, there’s a really popular option with Italian roots.

Give your look a bit of sprezzatura by making the tie tail longer. Don’t put it into the keeper loop either: just let it stay loose and untucked. If you like this look, long ties are handy whether you’re extra tall or not since they make it easier to manage. Just don’t overdo it or you’ll look like you’re overdoing it.

Another Use for Longer Ties

Extra long ties are also especially helpful when you’re choosing a bigger knot that requires multiple ins and outs as you’re tying it. (Not sure which knots are bigger? Want to expand your tie knot repertoire? My friend Antonio over at Real Men Real Style has you covered with instructions for no less than EIGHTEEN tie knots! Bonus: each infographic indicates the knot’s size and difficulty.)

A Few more Notes

Most standard ties are 56”-58” and most extra long ties are 62” or 63”. A select few tie companies also offer bespoke ties. More on those below.

Before we do a rundown of the brands and their prices, I want to cover something else that I’ve noticed. When I first started to build my tie collection, my MO was to collect as many patterns, colors, and styles as possible so I could always mix and match with the rest of my outfit. What I realized more recently, after building out my collection, is that the more I was willing to spend on ties, the fewer I actually wanted. Once I was able to invest in the better-quality ties, which usually started at around $90 apiece, I ended up wanting just have a few, refined, really nice ties. I’d rather have, for example, one well-made and versatile Rampley tie than five ties from the Gap’s sale bin that I’ll never actually wear.

Now let’s get down to business.
